FAT 32 file system was introduced for the first time with Windows 95 operating system, and was later used in Windows 98, Windows 2000 Server and is sometimes made use of in Windows XP operating systems. Though FAT 32 file system was initially used widely in most of the Windows operating systems, it later lost its prominence, with the advent of New Technology File System, better known as NTFS.

The advanced features of the NTFS file system made it the preferred file system over FAT 32 file system. Despite the wide usage of NTFS file system in most of the PCs of this day, there are still some older PCs and laptops that make use of the FAT file system. The very fact that there is no crash recovery or security options in the FAT file system makes PCs running on FAT file system more prone to data loss.
